Accessible Websites

Accessible websites for companies that understand that accessibility isn't just an extra feature. It will be mandatory starting in June 2025, but the real reason is something else: your website should work for everyone.

About 10 percent of the population lives with a disability. Many websites exclude these people, often without realizing it. Accessibility ensures that your website works for everyone, while also improving the user experience for every visitor.

BFSG: The Legal Situation

The Accessibility Enhancement Act has been in effect since June 28, 2025. It requires many companies to make their digital offerings accessible. The requirements are based on the European standard EN 301 549, which in turn is based on the WCAG 2.1 guidelines. We can advise you on whether your company is affected and assist you with implementation.

What Accessibility Really Means

Accessibility doesn’t mean your website looks different. It means it works for everyone: for people who use a screen reader, for people who can’t use a mouse, and for people with low vision. The foundation for this is the WCAG 2.1 guidelines (Level AA), which we apply as the minimum standard for every project.

Accessibility isn't achieved through a single tool or plugin, but rather through many design and development decisions that must work together. Here are the key areas we focus on and what makes the difference.

Visual Design and Contrasts

Colors, font sizes, and spacing determine whether your website is readable. We design using contrast ratios in accordance with WCAG AA (at least 4.5:1 for text) and ensure that color is never the sole means of conveying information.

Semantische HTML-Struktur mit Überschriftenebenen

Semantic HTML and Structure

A proper heading hierarchy, meaningful landmarks, and semantic markup help screen readers understand your content. We structure the page so that it works even without visual design.

Keyboard Navigation

Not all visitors use a mouse. We make sure that every feature of your website is accessible via the keyboard: navigation, forms, drop-down menus, and interactive elements. With visible focus indicators that show where the user is currently located.

Screen Reader Compatibility

ARIA labels, alt text, and a logical reading order ensure that screen readers render your content correctly. We test using popular screen readers and verify that all information is accessible.

Forms and Interactive Elements

Contact forms, filters, and interactive components are often the biggest barriers. We design forms with visible labels, clear error messages, and a user interface that works even without a mouse.

Video mit Untertiteldatei für barrierefreie Multimedia-Inhalte

Multimedia and Alternative Content

Images need alt text, videos need captions, and complex graphics need text descriptions. We ensure that all media content is accessible even if a visitor cannot see or hear it.

These companies know how we work

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 are the international standard for web accessibility. The standard defines three levels of conformance: A (basic requirements), AA (advanced standard), and AAA (highest standard). Level AA is the requirement set by the BFSG and our minimum standard for every project. The guidelines cover four principles: perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. We systematically test every website against these criteria and document the status in an audit report. The WCAG 2.1 criteria are specific and measurable, not open to interpretation. This means a website either meets them or it doesn’t. If not, we’ll show you exactly which points are missing. That way, you’ll know exactly where you stand and what needs to be done. A web accessibility agency must be familiar with these levels; otherwise, it’s making promises it can’t keep.

What Our Customers Say

„To me, having a strong partner is important. Someone who is “passionate” about their work, who offers well-reasoned professional objections but also accepts and continues to fully support my decisions as a client when I choose a different path. I’ve been working very successfully with seitenweise in this way for many years—both in day-to-day operations and on many large-scale projects.“

Audit and Assessment

We systematically audit your existing website against the WCAG 2.1 criteria. Each page is tested for contrast, keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, forms, and page structure. The result is a documented report detailing all findings, prioritized by severity. The assessment is structured and easy to follow. This way, you’ll know exactly where you stand and what needs to be addressed first. You can then move forward with your planning with clarity.

Strategy and Action Plan

Based on the audit, we develop a concrete action plan: Which findings are critical, which are high priority, and which can be addressed during normal operations? Each action item includes a timeline and a clear designation of whether it pertains to design, development, or editorial work. We provide a realistic estimate of the effort required for each action. This gives you planning certainty and a budget that’s just right.

Design and Customization

We adapt contrasts, font sizes, focus states, and color coding to meet WCAG requirements. If a redesign makes more sense than making individual corrections, we’ll be honest about it. In many cases, targeted adjustments to the existing design are sufficient to achieve compliance without changing the entire website. We work within a true design system and show you the changes before implementation.

Development and Implementation

We implement semantic HTML, ARIA labels, proper tab order, and accessible forms. We work directly within your CMS and ensure that the editorial tools are also configured to be accessible. After implementation, your team should be able to maintain content without accidentally creating barriers. We provide training so your editorial team knows what to look out for.

Testing and Acceptance

After implementation, we test again: automatically using tools like axe and Lighthouse, and manually using screen readers and keyboard navigation. We only release the website once all WCAG AA criteria have been met. Upon request, we can set up ongoing monitoring that regularly alerts you if new content creates barriers and could jeopardize your compliance.
